How to Fit Your Number Plates: A Step-by-Step Guide

Whether you've just bought a new car or your old number plates are looking a bit worse for wear, knowing how to fit new number plates yourself can save you time and money. This guide will walk you through the process, ensuring your number plates are securely and correctly attached to your vehicle.

Materials You'll Need

Before you start, gather the following tools and materials:

• New number plates/frames
• Screwdriver/drill
• Screws (available on our website)
• Double-sided adhesive pads (available on our website)

Step 1: Remove the Old Plates

1. Unscrew the old plates: If your old number plates are attached with screws, use a screwdriver/drill to remove them.
2. Remove adhesive pads: If adhesive pads were used, carefully peel off the old plates. You might need adhesive remover if there is a lot of excess tape left on the cat, but typically this is covered by the new plate so there is no need to go overboard trying to remove it all!

Step 2: Prepare the New Plates

1. Our number plates come with a protective film over the front of or standard plates & a white film covering the from of the 4D characters, you can simply peal this off & the plates are ready to go on the car. Do not remove the white part from the back of the plate, this is the reflective graphic material.

Step 3: Attach the Plates

Using Screws

1. Position the plate: Hold the new number plate in place on the car. Ensure it is aligned correctly, central & level.
2. Screw in place: Screw directly through the plate (not through a 3D/4D digit) using our self tapping screws, there is no need to pre drill holes as using slight pressure will be enough to go through the plates & hold them to the car. Do not try & use the old holes, use a blue/black cap through the IRL badge & a white one on the opposite side. Close the caps & the process is complete.

Using Adhesive Pads

1. Apply the pads: If you prefer not to drill, you can use double-sided adhesive pads. Apply several pads evenly on the back of the new number plate.
2. Clean the area: To achieve a strong bond, clean the area where you plan to fix the number plate with warm soapy water & dry.
3. Position and press: Align the number plate on the car, then press firmly to ensure the adhesive pads stick properly.

Using Number Plate Frames/Holders

1. Align the frame backing to the car: You can sometimes use manufacturer holes on the rear of the car, align the symmetrical holes for screws to these & screw them into place. On the front, usually we recommend making new holes in the plastic bumper to ensure the number plate & holder are held securely.
2. Insert the plate to frame backing: Slight bend the number plate so the you can insert to the backing holder, with each end tucked in, push the plate upwards under the lip at the top so it is secure.
3. Insert the holder slat: Slightly bend the holder slat in each end of the frame & press clips into place.

Step 5: Final Checks

1. Check alignment: Ensure the number plates are straight and centered. A misaligned plate can not only look unprofessional but may also be illegal.
2. Secure tightly: Ensure that the number plates/frames are securely attached and do not move or rattle.

• Regular maintenance: Check periodically to ensure the plates are still securely attached and readable. Clean them regularly to maintain visibility.
